Tips for Choosing a Photographer

You can be sure of Marmalade

Couples in the UK spend on average £1,016.52 on their wedding photography – a large chunk of their big-day fund. But don’t be tempted to rope in a family friend with a pocket digital to try to save money. A professional will know how to deal with the variety of lighting conditions on your wedding day, how to get the best shots with your guests, the most flattering shots with you, and will have back-up equipment and insurance to ensure nothing can go wrong.

1. Consider Your Style: The current vogue is ‘reportage’, un-posed photo-journalism. If you like this style, ensure that you find a photographer that offers a hybrid of reportage and staged shots (or you may not get some of the formal groupings you want). Share with them your likes and dislikes of some images you have seen.

2. Good Relations: Always meet a couple of photographers prior to booking one. If you feel comfortable having a coffee or a beer with them you are likely to feel comfortable with them sharing your day, and being sympathetic to your needs. They should be inconspicuous during the day, but fully prepared and ready to take the lead when required to get the shots you want in the time available. Make sure they are the kind of people that will get the best from you and your guests. Trust is vital.

3. Think Practical: Make sure you ask the right questions. How many photographers will there be on the day? How many weddings do they do each day? Do they have professional insurance and back up equipment? When will you get to see your photo’s after the wedding? (If they won’t commit to a time-frame in writing – walk away.) How long will they need on the day to get the shots you want, as you must build this into your day planner? Who owns the rights to the photographs? Be prepared to pay a deposit, and insist on a written confirmation from the photographer of the ‘deal’ containing what is and is not included.
